We are delighted to announce the first of the 2024/25 AULRE Webinar Series
17th October 2024: 17.30-19.00.
RE and Holocaust Education post October 7 2023.
With Dr Alasdair Richardson: University of Winchester Reader in Education (Holocaust Education) and Postgraduate Research Student Lead (Faculty of Education & the Arts).
In this evening’s session we ask:
How can we support ITE trainees (and each other) in teaching about the Holocaust in RE? We know the challenges of teaching about the scale and impact of the Holocaust are many, and that RE offers a unique space in which young people can encounter, explore, and begin to make sense of it. In this session we will consider what this ‘unique space’ might look like, and what teaching about the Holocaust through an RE perspective might offer. Particularly, we will think about the challenges of teaching about the Holocaust in the present day – as the event stands on the edge of living memory, and within the difficult context of the ongoing Gaza-Israel conflict. We will consider the tensions that might arise, the potential for misinformation or distortion, and the need for clear guidance for our trainees as they navigate difficult conversations in their classrooms.
The session is hosted at NICER, Canterbury Christ Church University and chaired by Dr Patricia Hannam
